Terms of use

The short answer

MiniSplitZip is an information site. Its cost-to-heat, savings and sizing numbers are estimates built from public data and a simplified model. They are not professional HVAC, electrical or financial advice, and they come with no warranty. Use a licensed contractor to size and install any system.

By using this site you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

What this site is

MiniSplitZip publishes calculators, tables and guides about cold-climate mini-split heat pumps. It does not sell equipment, install anything or give quotes. Nothing here creates a professional relationship between you and the site's operator.

Estimates, not advice

How the numbers are made, and their limits, are described on How we verify.

No warranty

The site and everything on it are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including accuracy, completeness, fitness for a particular purpose or availability. We try to cite and date every source, but we do not guarantee that the data or the model are error-free or current.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, the operator of this site is not liable for any loss or damage, direct or indirect, that comes from using or relying on the site, including purchasing, sizing, installation or financial decisions. Some places do not allow certain limits, so this applies only as far as local law permits.

Third-party links and affiliate relationships

The site links to other websites, including government data sources and retailers. We do not control them and are not responsible for their content or practices. Some retail links are affiliate links: if you buy through one, the site may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This never changes an estimate or a ranking. Details are on the affiliate disclosure page.

Data, licences and attribution

The datasets on this site come from public sources such as NOAA, the U.S. Energy Information Administration, ENERGY STAR (EPA) and the U.S. Census Bureau. Each source, its licence or terms of use, and how the files were cleaned are listed on the data page and in How we verify. If you reuse the cleaned files, credit both this site and the original source, and follow the original source's terms. Site design, text and code are the operator's, and you may quote short extracts with a link back.

Acceptable use

Please do not try to disrupt the site, overload it with automated requests, or present its estimates as a quote, guarantee or professional opinion.

Privacy

What the site collects, if anything, is described on the privacy page.

Changes to these terms

We may change these terms from time to time. The date at the bottom of this page shows the latest revision, and continued use after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws that apply to the site's operator, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. If a part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest still applies.
